盛夏时节,景德镇热浪滚滚。在景德镇御窑博物院的文物修补室内,温润的永乐甜白瓷器碎片堆满了宽大的工作台。文物修补专家江小民弯着腰,仔细地比对着每一块瓷片,仿佛在与六百年前的窑火进行着日常的交流。
根据《天工开物》的记载,一件瓷器的制作过程需要经过“七十二道工序,方能制成器皿”。从采集原料、制作泥土到最终入窑烧制,“72双手”各司其职,共同造就了御窑瓷器精美的工艺。随着景德镇考古工作的不断深入,陶瓷修补技艺也日益精进,它们如同景德镇的“第73双手”,让沉睡地底数百年的破碎瓷器重获完整,让断裂的历史得以重新诉说。
江小民正是其中一位“历史的修补者”。他告诉记者,自己首次独立承担修补工作是在1991年,那是一件永乐年间的褐彩龙纹侈口碗。这件碗的缺失部分相当大,按照当时常用的石膏修补方法,需要分多次进行填补。这不仅延长了工期,而且多次填补的石膏颜色深浅不一,打磨平整后,接缝处显得尤为明显。
“效果不佳。”在多次尝试后,江小民决定放弃旧方法,他按照碗本身的弧度,亲手制作了内模和外模,一次性将石膏灌注成型。经过反复试验,耗时将近一个月,他终于将这件碗修补到了自己满意的状态。
瓷器修补工作,就像是在拼凑一幅极其庞大的拼图。“寻找匹配的碎片是修补过程中最考验耐心的环节。”通常,相同形制的器物会有数十甚至上百件一同被打碎埋藏,因此,要从成千上万的碎片中找出属于同一件器物的组成部分,无异于大海捞针。经过多年的摸索,他和团队总结出了一套“多级分类、系列复原”的方法:首先按照器形、釉色、纹饰等进行逐层细致的划分,分类越精细,同类别的瓷片就越集中,然后再从中逐一进行拼对,这样往往一次就能复原出多件同类型的器物。
在三十多年的修补生涯中,江小民对陶瓷修补的理解也在不断深化。从最初只追求拼合的完整性,到后来尝试补绘纹饰、仿制釉面以达到“完美修复”,再到现在遵循“最小干预”的原则,他和团队走出了一条独特的修补之路——“降阶法”。
降阶法并不追求所谓的“天衣无缝”的修复效果,而是强调“远观相似,近看有别”,让观者一眼就能辨别出哪些是原件,哪些是修复的部分。“早年我们也尝试过将缺失的部分做得和原件一模一样,但随着时间的推移,我们发现过度的手工干预会改变器物原本的面貌,反而丢失了最宝贵 Thus, the historian's contribution is not simply to piece together fragments, but to engage in a dialogue with Ming Dynasty artisans across centuries, gradually reassembling the scattered remnants of history into their original form.
In Jiang Xiaomin's view, repairing archaeological porcelain is more akin to "dissecting" an artifact. During the process of piecing together, the thickness of different parts of the porcelain shards, the treatment of the seams, and the details of the evolution of the shape are all revealed to the repairer, secrets that a complete artifact would never disclose.
While restoring a Yongle-era blue and white flattened pot, he "felt" the evolutionary trajectory of this type of artifact. Early flattened pots had rounded bottoms with no foot rings; in the late Yongle period, small foot rings were added, but the center of gravity was too high, resulting in poor stability; by the Xuande period, the pot's foot gradually widened and enlarged, making it more stable. "Just by observing the changes in the shape of the foot ring, one can accurately determine the age of the artifact." He also discovered during the repair process that the artisans of that time would pre-carve grooves to embed the pot's handle and then apply glaze, ensuring a strong bond. "These secrets might have been difficult to discover without personally 'dissecting' the broken porcelain shards."
Today, technologies like CAD drawing and 3D printing have, to some extent, improved the efficiency of basic tasks. However, Jiang Xiaomin believes that technology is ultimately a tool; artifact repair relies on human hands and a patient heart. "If one cannot calm down and sit still, they cannot do this job."
The "72 hands" brought about the exquisite splendor of porcelain; the "73rd hand" allows broken history to be continued. On the repair table, over thirty years of time are condensed within the seams of the pieced-together porcelain shards. Sunlight streams in through the window, while the porcelain shards on the table remain as silent as ever. For Jiang Xiaomin, repair is never simply about gluing fragments together; it is about engaging in a dialogue with Ming Dynasty artisans across centuries, gradually reassembling the scattered remnants of history into their original form.
